A Nurse turns Cake Artist... to Blogger? What's next?

My first blog! ... and I'm terrified!

Just when I think I got a handle on this new venture, I'm told that if I want to be a real Boss Babe, I got to get into the blogging world. So here it goes.

Perhaps I should start with more about me and how I got here.

*Disclaimer - I'm going to be that girl with gifs everywhere.

So. Where to begin. I've always been interested in art and enjoyed doing artistic things but I never took it seriously because "you can't make a career out of it". So I changed my focus and passion towards "doing good in the world" and "being helpful to others" by going to the University of Calgary to get my Bachelors in Nursing.

As much as I loved Nursing, I found myself still looking for a creative outlet. Then entered Food Network. I was so amazed and inspired at the pieces of edible art being made on these cake competition shows, and I thought, what a perfect way to be artistic, have a positive impact on others, AND have a successful career.

So in 2009, I decided I would make my first cake ever. I could barely make scrambled eggs, but goddammit I was going to make an amazing cake.

I realized after 10 hours in a kitchen that looked like it went through hell and didn't make it back alive that this cake thing was much harder than it looked on TV. But I was still very proud of this saggy cake, and so was my now husband (he's sticking to that story anyway).

In the past 9 years I've taken numerous classes, both hands on and online, and I got to practice and make cakes for my family and friends. It was definitely a huge learning curve, and a process that resulted in smooshed/leaning/dropped/fugly cakes, sleepless nights, and tears... But most importantly, I gained knowledge, experience, and confidence. Enough confidence to quit full time Nursing and build my cake studio.

I'm still keeping my nursing license and working on a casual basis in the Mental Health field, but I now get the pleasure to refocus my passion again towards building my cake business and improving my cake decorating skills.

I would not have even fathomed this without cable TV and Duff Goldman from Ace of Cakes... but it would not have been possible without the love and support from my husband, family, and friends. Thank you for pushing me and helping me get to where I am today! I am so excited for what the future may bring!
